GERMAN SOFTWARE HOUSE CHOOSES SOLID Web Engine FOR INTRANET PURCHASE APPLICATION

The German software house Factum Projektentwicklung und Management GmbH chose SOLID Web Engine to be deployed with intraNEWS Box, its Intranet solution for buying groups. This solution allows German buying groups to access information about products, services, and their availability and to place orders directly through their web browsers.

For their customers Factum needed an extremely care-free data management system that could be embedded into a product and distributed to numerous organizations. "After comparing SOLID Web Engine against a number of competing products, we chose SOLID Web Engine to be the data management component of the intraNEWS Box. It gives us all the benefits we were looking for: it has a small footprint, is care-free, and based on standards", says Mr. Marcus Brüggeman, CEO of Factum GmbH.

intraNEWS Box is a Web server network for German buying groups, which are associations of companies within a certain branch who have joined forces in purchasing activities. The member companies are able to achieve the benefits of high-volume purchases otherwise unavailable for small and middle-sized companies. A buying group can have from 100 up to 2000 member companies.

The intraNEWS Box system allows purchasers at individual companies to quickly look up information and order various goods and services by simply using their Web browser. All information is distributed electronically rather than by mail or fax.

Each local intraNEWS Box is connected via ISDN to a central server where shared information is hosted. The IntraNEWS Box runs on a Linux web server and the database operates on SOLID Web Engine for Linux. The application is written with Java and uses SOLID JDBC Driver to access the database. By the end of 1998 intraNEWS Boxes will be installed at more than 2000 organizations.
