EMARE: European Media Artists in Residence Exchange
The EMARE program was initiated in 1994 by four European media art organisations: Hull Time Based Arts, Kingston Upon Hull, The United Kingdom; MUU Mediabase, Helsinki, Finland; Werkleitz Gesellschaft, Tornitz, Germany; and the Intermedia Department of the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, Budapest. C3: Center for Culture & Communication became the Hungarian partner of the exchange program in 1997.
The aim of the EMARE program, which was financed by the Kaleidoscope Program of the European Union, was to enable the collaboration between European artists on projects with host media art organisations. EMARE offered the opportunity for individual artists to experiment and develop their own projects within a new context. Within the framework of EMARE, each partner organisation invited up to 3 foreign artists per year, based on applications sent by the other partners. The program covered the travel and accomodation expenses, and offered stipends for the artists for the residency period. The guest artists received day to day support and technical assistance for their work. EMARE also offered a social space for the artists in residence to network with local artists and publics.
The art works completed during the residency period, whether single screen video/ film production or new media installation, were shown in the context of international media art festivals and exhibitions such as Ostranenie Festival, Dessau/Werkleitz and the ROOT Festival, Hull. In the same way, C3 organised presentations for the EMARE artists working in Budapest, in the framework of exhibitions.
